Even though we haven't had much snow up here in Michigan, it has been quite cold. Thankfully Jake's parents have a big fireplace. It has been so nice to cuddle up by the fireplace in the evenings and listen to the crackly fire. You can't get much better than that on a cold winter night. Fireplaces sure know how to make a house seem more like a home. I'm even a fan of these faux fireplaces. They don't give off the cozy heat, but they sure do add to the decor!
One of my favorite things as a kid was when my mom would come in my room early in the morning while I was still asleep and whisper "it's a snow day. School is canceled". That's the best news any kid could hear. Not only do you not have to sit in class all day, but there is plenty of snow outside to play in.
Up here in Traverse City there has been an unusually small amount of snow. The ground hasn't been completely covered yet, but we have managed to play in what we have had a little. Today we are spending our day relaxing, playing games, and sipping hot cocoa while wrapped in blankets (lots of blankets). We'll probably end up watching our favorite disney movie, 101 Dalmatians. I'd say that makes for a pretty good snow day. What do you like to do on a snow day?
Jamie and I are huge fans of A Charlie Brown Christmas, and wanted to design a poster inspired by it. We came up with this design, and had a lot of fun making it. And being the ambitious typographic animator that I am, I decided at the last minute that I wanted to animate it. I hope you enjoyed it!
We wish you a very merry Christmas, and hope you all enjoy spending time with your family and friends as we celebrate the birth of Jesus.
We are so excited to be able to say that we printed our Christmas cards this year on our letterpress! It was the first time we printed with white ink, and the first time we printed on kraft paper. We couldn't be more satisfied with the way they came out. The photo was taken by us in front of our Christmas tree, and added to the back of the card using photo corners. We always love designing and putting together things for our own projects. It's so nice having someone with such similar interests always with you to share special times like these.
We got an email over the weekend from a fellow blogger, Elle from Holdfast, who wanted to share with us her handmade Christmas tree. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to share it with you. I love her choice of painting it white and the simplicity of ornaments. It's definitely far from being a traditional tree, but as Elle said, "This year it's all about cutting back on materialistic products and expectations. Christmas is about enjoying family and friends company and I believe my tree still gives without all the accessories." I think that just about sums it up. Watch out Carlie Brown; there's a new Christmas tree in town!
At the beginning of the holiday season I did a post on gift wrapping with kraft paper. If you missed it you can check it out here. Here are some other ideas on how to use kraft paper all throughout your holiday decorating. I guess I should've bought a jumbo roll!
TREE BACKDROP: This would be cute for any Christmas party or just to add some Christmas cheer in other rooms of the house. I could see this idea in a playroom for kids to color on all throughout the holiday season.
STOCKING: Fill with Christmas candy to top off your gifts.
TABLE: A perfect way to decorate the kids table. Give them some crayons and let them go crazy with coloring. You could also use a kraft paper as a runner for the adult table and write everyone's name on it write above their plate.
WREATH: Add a bright red bow and you've got yourself a Christmas wreath.
We made it to Michigan! We woke up this morning and it was lightly snowing. So far there is just a light dusting, but I have high hopes. Posts on our blog might be a little sparse the rest of the year, but we will do our best to keep updating. Enjoy your weekend!
Jake and I already decided that when we are looking for a house we want it to have a nice big window up front where we can put our Christmas tree. It's quite the welcome when you're greeted by your Christmas tree as soon as you come home.
I alway enjoy going to other people's homes during the holidays to see how they decorate their tree. They come in all different shapes, sizes and even colors. My favorite are the trees filled with handmade ornaments and old pictures. It really makes the holidays special when you can reflect on all the fond memories from years past. I look forward to filling our tree with cute hand crafted ornaments made by our future children.
Have you seen the new Muppet movie? Jake and I saw it over Thanksgiving weekend. It was fabulous and really fun to watch. I'm loving this Muppet Alphabet too by Mike Boon! They even made it into a shirt on Threadless.
Yesterday I told you a little bit about our Christmas party that we had over the weekend. This year we decided to have a hot chocolate themed party. I have lots of pictures to share with you and even free printables you can download if you have the urge to throw a seriously sweet party. Cold weather is here to stay, what better an excuse to grab a few friends and sip on something sweet that is sure to warm you up from your toes to your nose!
For our party we sent out these invites in the mail a few weeks ahead of time so our friends could be sure to mark the date on their calendars. Jake and I purchased some plain white mugs from Home Goods for really cheap (just over one dollar per mug) and decorated each one differently with a Pebeo Porcelain Pen. When our guests arrived they picked the mug design they liked best, used it for their cocoa throughout the night and then took it home as our gift to them. They were a big hit with everyone, plus they were really fun and easy to make!
We stocked the hot chocolate bar with candy canes, marshmallows, chocolate filled wafers, and vanilla syrup. We also served frosted sugar cookies and pretzels to add a touch of salt to all the sweet. We also sent our guests home with an additional hot chocolate on a stick, wrapped and taged, ready for the next time they're in need of something warm to drink.
I've decided I really like throwing parties. Not only do we get to spend time with our friends, but it gives me an excuse to design some cute stuff that I can share with my friends and all of you. You can download and print any of the artwork I designed for our party by clicking on the links below.
Welcome back from the weekend everyone! We hope yours treated you well; Jake and I sure enjoyed ours. A few weeks back, Katherine from Gathered Heart posted her grocery list as an illustration. It was so cute and it's been forever since I've taken the time to draw so I thought I would take a shot at illustrating our weekend.
Our friends Jake and Erika spent all day Saturday with us helping us get ready for our Christmas party. We made all kinds of goodies together. At one point we tried drying chocolate dipped candy canes by hanging them on a clothes hanger. In theory it should've worked, but wasn't so successful in reality. We always have a lot of fun (and laughs) with them.
The party was a success! All of our friends came over and we enjoyed each others company while sipping delicious hot chocolate, putting together a puzzle and playing games. And of couse everyone had a blast with the white elephant gift exchange. I don't know how our friends come up with their gift ideas, but they are always great. I got a toy that launches little plastic babies, called a baby shooter. Now tell me that isn't entertaining! After our gift exchange we all watched Elf (now a Christmas tradition).
Then to top it all off, Jake and Erika asked us both to be in their wedding! We are so SO excited and honored. I can already tell from what they have planned that this wedding is going to be amazing!
Thank you so much for all who entered the Letterpress Gift Tag Giveaway! We had so much fun reading all your favorite Christmas traditions. Katie you should definitely start dressing up like Mary and Joseph again and Janee I think I'm going to try Almond Champagne now!
Courtney, we'll be contacting you shortly for your address so we can get you your holiday gift tags right away. Congratulations!
Jake and I are having our 2nd annual Christmas party this Saturday! We planed it all out, bought ingredients for all the goodies, and now just have to make them all. I'm looking forward to having a nice time with all of our friends before heading home for the holidays. It's going to be so much fun. Now if only Will Arnett and Amy Poehler were coming. I'm pretty sure we could be pretty good friends. They're the best as you can clearly tell from the picture. Maybe next year I'll send them an invitation.
I don't bake cookies all that often, but when Christmas time rolls around it's one of those things that Christmas just wouldn't seem right without. Usually my family bakes the same cookies every year. I like it that way. I'm a stickler when it comes to tradition. We always bake my favorite thumbprint cookies, good ol' chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies decorated with Christmas frosting and sprinkles, and then my dad's favorite, buckeyes.
I've been eyeing a lot of beautiful cookies on Pinterest lately. Now of course none of these would replace our traditional cookies, but I don't mind adding a few to the list. I mean who can resist those cute little snowmen?
On a side note: The gift tag giveaway ends tomorrow (Dec 8). So If you haven't already, be sure to sign up!
I am currently loving Quill & Fox Design. I just recently discovered them and I can't get enough. Their designs are so fun and cute. And the colors, oh the colors!
I'm especially loving their wedding suites. For a long time now I've been wanting to put together a wedding line for our shop. Maybe this is enough to finally inspire me to do it. On top of that, our good friends Jake and Erika just got engaged over Thanksgiving weekend and we couldn't be more excited, happy, and trilled for them! Needless to say I have mushy gushy love on my mind.
Not too many things are better than a freshly baked Christmas cookie, but how much better would a cookie be if it had a personal message on it? Now that's sweet! I'm thinking maybe some custom cookies for Santa are in order.

It's December first! You know what that means: snow days! Snowmen! Snow angels! Snow banks! And best of all, Christmas! Our celebration of Christmas went into full swing the day after Thanksgiving, but there's just something about it being December that really jumpstarts the festivities. We're almost ready to send out our own Christmas cards, and we're throwing our second annual Bartlett Christmas party next Saturday that we can't wait to tell you all about.
To put your desktop wallpaper in the Christmas mood, here is a festive wallpaper for you to display all month long. This moth's font is Futura, and is probably one of our favorite sans serif fonts. We use it in a lot of our own designs.
Font Fun Fact: Wes Anderson uses Futura in all of his films.
