I alway get a little nervous when one of my favorite artists releases a new album. What if the new material isn't as good as before? Thankfully A Fine Frenzy hasn't let me down. I've been listening to the new album Pines nonstop since it came out at the beginning of this month. The music is perfect for a nice cozy relaxing day at home.

I've never really thought about seasons having certain types of music other then the Christmas music we listen to during the holidays. If fall could have a type of music I image this would be it. It's perfect for the cooler days and darker nights ahead.

Our Weekend

October 29, 2012

Once again Jake and I had a lovely weekend together. Saturday morning I decided to start the weekend right with some yummy caramelized apple oatmeal. It was really delicious. I wouldn't mind another bowl right now in fact.

Later that day we headed over to a pumpkin patch to celebrate our friend Dana's birthday. I found the cutest baby pumpkin. It was only one dollar so I couldn't pass it up. We also had to run to target for a few things. I spotted these knitted heart mittens. It's hard to justify buying them living in southern California; but I did wear them when I got out of bed this morning because it was so chilly in our house. That's putting them to good use right?

On Sunday we went to a local park and had fun taking cutesy pictures with friends. I'll be posting some of those later this week.

Oh and believe it or not we started another DIY project that I am really excited about. Unfortunately we couldn't find everything we needed locally and had to order a few things online.

That was our weekend. I hope you had good one too!

Finders Keepers: Mechanical Colored Pencils

October 26, 2012

One thing I miss about going back to school every fall is getting all the new school supplies. I love a freshly sharpened pencil. These Mechanical Colored Pencils from Anthropologie would for sure have been in my trapper keeper this year. Do they even still make trapper keepers?

MUTEMATH: Animated Lyric Video

October 25, 2012

This is something I've been wanting to share for a long time, I just haven't been able to make it public until now. Back in July, I starting thinking about where I wanted to go with my career and how I wanted to use the skills I've developed. One of the ideas that I kept coming back to was working with one of my favorite musical artists professionally. Only a few of my favorite bands are still making music, so the list of artists I could potentially work with was very short. After a lot of thinking, I just shot for the highest goal and picked my favorite band: MUTEMATH.

I wasn't exactly sure how to even attempt to get ahold of them, but I found an email address for their record label (which they own). It probably wasn't the best way to get their attention, but it was the only way of contacting them that I found. So, I wrote up an email proposal explaining what I do and how I would like to create something for them, but I quickly realized that I didn't have much grounds for collaboration without an example of what I do. It's been so long since I've worked hard on a project for myself, so I didn't have anything that represented what I've learned how to do in the last two years. I decided I would just make a sample animation from a portion of one of their songs to show them what I'm capable of creating. Very quickly into the process, I realized I wasn't going to be able to stop after a small portion, so I just decided to animate the entire song.

It's always dangerous when you're working on an animation for yourself without a deadline, because you can always add more. Fortunately for me, a surprising turn of events transpired very soon after I began animating. Jamie and I discovered through Roy, the bass player's, blog that while they were touring, he was offering bass lessons to anyone who lived near the area he was playing. I was extremely excited about it, but I haven't been able to get any of my bass guitars out to California since we got married, so I basically just forgot about it. Jamie knew this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up though, and my birthday was in September, so she decided it was time I got a new Bass and started playing again. Needless to say, I was floored! We picked out a bass and put a whole kit together for everything I need to get playing again.

I really have the greatest wife in the world. Not only did she buy me a brand new bass, but she also booked me a lesson with Roy for three weeks later. That's when I realized that I would probably never have a better opportunity to give my animation directly to a member of the band, which gave me a strict deadline. It worked out perfectly though because I was knew when I had to be finished, and I was able to hand it to him in person. Our lesson was great; it jumpstarted my passion for music and I've been practicing again.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Roy actually came to our apartment for the lesson; how cool is that? One of my favorite bassists from my absolute favorite band giving me a one-on-one lesson in my own apartment? It was surreal.

And now for the moment you've all been waiting for...here is the animation I put more time and effort into than probably anything I've ever created.

Click here to watch in HD.

To wrap up this story, Roy loved the animation, and showed it to their lead singer who also thought it was great. He told me that they're keeping me in mind for future graphic needs. My hard work paid off, and I've got a new piece that I'm proud of for my demo reel.

Watch Me Grow: 21 Weeks

October 24, 2012

Today's a big day for Pixel. It's his last day of puppy class! He will be tested to see if he has learned everything he needs to in order to graduate. Pixel has been doing really well so I think he will do just fine. Over the last 6 weeks he has definitely become the teacher's pet. That's got to count for something, right?

Vintage Hankies

October 23, 2012

I got a bunch of beautiful hankies from my Grandmother not too long ago. They were all nicely folded and tucked away in her dresser. These are just a few of my favorites.

There have been many times I've come across hankies in vintage shops and almost bought some. Now I have some that actually mean something to me. These were something my Grandmother had for many years. I think that's pretty special.

Quill & Fox: Holiday Collection

October 22, 2012

If you're new to our blog, I think you should know I love Christmas. I'm one of those people that could easily start listening to Christmas music today all the way through the new year. I get giddy when I see stores bringing out festive decorations from their summer hibernation and my heart grows two sizes when I think about hanging our stockings by the chimney with care. So just to forewarn you, there are many more Chistmasy post in your future.

Some more work from Quill & Fox is just the way to start the season. I know I post a lot about them; it's just that I love their stuff and I want to share it will you. I hope you don't mind.

We are still a little ways away from the holidays, but there is no reason we can't enjoy some good design that just so happens to be for Christmas, right? And so we don't completely over look Mr. Thanksgiving, I've thrown in a few of their turkey day designs for him too.

Finders Keepers: Handmade Packaging Workshop

October 19, 2012

The title about says it all. It's enough for me to snatch this book right up.

I was also over on Yellow Bird, Yellow Beard this week. Be sure to check out my Fall Package For a Friend post.

And just in case you missed it, there are some sweet Halloween printables that I got to design for The Sweetest Occasion over on there blog.

Halloween Printables for The Sweetest Occasion

October 18, 2012

Last month I received an email from the lovely Cyd of The Sweetest Occasion. I have been a fan of her wonderful blog for a while now so you can only imagine the sheer giddiness I felt when she asked me if I would design a printable for her blog. As you can guess I of course said yes. Then I grabbed my pencil and some paper and got right to work. I've been so excited to show you how they turned out, I could hardly sleep last night.

So without further ado, here are the halloween printables I designed for The Sweetest Occasion.

Janet Hill Paintings

October 17, 2012

I'm quickly discovering there are not enough walls in our apartment for all the art I want to hang on them. I'm hoping I can squeeze in one more of these paintings by Janet Hill. I just recently came across her work and she is quickly becoming one of my favorite painters. I love the dramatic colors and quirky subject matter in each piece.

I also read a really great interview with her in Matchbook Magazine. I'm kind of a sucker for artist interviews. Its like a little peek into their lives. You get to see how and where they work. It's so inspiring to me. The pictures of her working in her studio with globs of paint on her easel make we want to grab a brush and try my hand at oil painting.

I had a really hard time picking only a handfull of paintings to post. They are all so lovely. So be sure to check out all her other paintings on her website and in her shop. Don't you think a Dalmatian would be perfect for her next subject? I would even let Pixel model for her if she wanted.

A Pair of Pears Branding

October 16, 2012

I've been wanting to tidy up our branding for a while now. I finally had the time to sit down and get it done. I organized everything that makes up our brand so when I'm ready to use it--it's all right there. I also went ahead and designed our letterhead and ordered a few stamps for packaging. The stamps came in the mail yesterday. They turned out just how I wanted; I can't wait to stamp everything!

Christmas Card Inspiration

October 15, 2012

Today I thought I would get a head start on our Christmas card. I started looking around for some inspiration. I'm not really sure which direction I want to go this year. I know I would like to include a picture but that's about it. I really love the custom illustrations, but then again I'm also drawn to something super simple. See what I mean? I'm just not sure. Here is what I have gathered for inspiration so far. You can check out our Christmas cards from years past here and here.

For the Taking: Halloween Treat Bag Toppers

October 12, 2012

Happy Friday everyone! I thought I would end this week with a little something for you. Here are some free Halloween treat bag toppers. These would be fun for classroom treats, lunch boxes, or your neighborhood trick-or-treaters. Just fill a sandwich sized bag up with your goodies and staple on the topper.

Watch Me Grow: 19 Weeks

October 11, 2012

Poor little Pixel. He looks a little sad in this one. I don't blame him though. He had just gotten fixed so the vet made him wear the cone of shame for a full week. Thankfully he made it through and at least we all got a few good laughs from it.

City Maps

October 10, 2012

I love a good map. I especially love these screen printed ones from The Harbinger Co. They make me want to do some sort of map series for our shop. Maybe some day. For now I'll just admire these and work on the hundreds of other ideas I have first.

Handsome Coffee

October 9, 2012

Here at the Bartlett house we love a good cup of coffee; but something we love even more is a well designed coffee brand to go along with it. Handsome Coffee Roasters is one of the best I've seen yet. It's rustic, handmade and definitely handsome. That's about everything I need to enjoy a good brew.

Great work ptarmak. Now we just need to go taste it. I'm thinking this Saturday morning would be nice.

Fall Food

October 8, 2012

Fall has finally come around to our neck of the woods and I couldn't be more excited. We had such a fun and relaxing weekend enjoying it! We went on walks, visited the park, headed to our little downtown for a festival and even went and saw Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. It was fabulous.

I successfully avoided going grocery shopping all weekend. I'm not the biggest fan of this chore. However, since this week calls for cooler weather, I'm going to go fall food crazy. Here are a few items on my list. Do you have a fall favorite food?

Taste of Fall

October 4, 2012

I've been gone the last couple days visiting family. It's been a year and a half since I've seen most of them. My little niece and nephew are getting so big. I had so much fun with them. My nephew has the cutest smile that melts me every time and my niece says the silliest and sweetest things.

While visiting, the weather in Colorado was beautiful and perfect. The air was cool and the sun was warm. It was a nice taste of fall. I am really looking forward to going back for Christmas this year.
