Moodboard: Simple & Sophisticated

February 28, 2013

I decided to start incorporating moodboards into my design process. This is my first one and it has been so helpful and really fun to work with my clients to put together. Who wouldn't love an excuse to scour Pinterest for work?

This moodboard is for a branding project I'm working on. The final identity will be mostly neutral colors with a few bolder accent colors.

Alright got to run. I'm so excited to get started I can't wait any longer.

Pantone Pairings

February 27, 2013

Have you seen these Pantone Pairings by David Schwen? They are so clever. I love it when designers step away from the computer and play with tangible things. I really should challenge myself to do that more often. I'm not sure I could come up with something this good though. I guess I won't know until I try. As Barney Stinson would say, "challenge accepted."

In Motion: Typography Overload

Get ready for a truckload of unique, hand-illustrated typography! Artist Leandro Senna created 66 beautiful lyric cards to go along with Bob Dylan's iconic "Subterranean Homesick Blues" without the aid of a computer. Check out the impressive result:

You can see each card up close and read about Leandro's process over on his website.

Decorate Your Desktop: 02

February 25, 2013

Desktop  |  iPhone  |  iPhone5  |  Android

I thought it was about time to do another wallpaper design. I won't always to designs with quotes but this one really speaks to me. I really love it. I think we tend to put a lot of value on keeping busy and filling up every spot on our calendar. Maybe in a way it makes us feel important. I think we have it all backwards. We should savor every moment we have and not keep rushing from one thing to the next.

I challenge you to make some time in your calendar this week to just be quite and relax. Go grab a cup of coffee and just sit. Don't peek at your phone or check facebook. Just be present wherever you are at. It's pretty refreshing.

And as a way to keep each other accountable, I would love to see what you did to slow down this week. Post a picture to instagram and tag it with #theslowdownproject. I know, I know, I just said no phones so post it before or after. I think sharing pictures will be a fun way to encourage each other to slow down and maybe even give each other some good ideas.

I'll share some of them next week here on the blog.

You can find the first decorate your desktop design here.

Finders Keepers: Google Glass

February 22, 2013

I found another video yesterday that really got me pumped up, so Jamie's letting me post two days in a row :). Google has been developing a headset that let's you do all kinds of cool stuff -- hands free. I'll let the video explain everything for you.

Don't you just love technology? Google is taking applications for people who want to test out Glass before they open sales up to the public. I was all set to write up my own application when I got to the part where it said "Explorers will each need to pre-order a Glass Explorer Edition for $1500 plus tax". That was pretty disappointing. Oh well though, we'll just have to give it time for the price to come down I guess.

In Motion: A Defense of Comic Sans

February 21, 2013

Today I wanted to share an informative video I came across while I was at work. Most people (especially designers) know that Comic Sans is generally considered a "bad" font. Well, here's a video explaining how it became so overused and unpopular in the design world. It tells the complete history of comic sans and has a lot of typography info. Enjoy!

So, there you go. Comic Sans isn't inherently evil. Still, don't use it.

Weekend Hike at Eaton Canyon

February 19, 2013

Remember how last week I told you Jake and I were wanting to be better about exploring California? Well I'm proud to say we did a pretty good job of doing just that this weekend.

On Saturday we packed up a lunch and went to Eaton Canyon in Pasadena. We had never been before and it was the perfect day for a hike.

The trail was really beautiful. A little stream ran along the path. Pixel loved splashing through it. I think he was a little shocked at how much colder it was from his bath water though.

At the end of the trail there was a 40 foot waterfall. It was really beautiful. We sat there for a while and let Pixel play in the water.

We couldn't pass up a picture of Pixel by a firetruck! He was such a good worker carrying his water and out snacks in his little backpack.

On the drive home Pixel was so tired that he fell asleep; it was so cute. I think we wore him out.

Finders Keepers: LA Life

February 15, 2013

all photos from Call Me Cal
I'm pretty excited about this find and it's just in time for a long weekend. Callie or I guess I should say Cal from Call Me Cal is a fellow blogger living in LA. Unfortunately I missed meeting her at ALT. On her blog, she has a whole section on life in LA. She lists things to do and places to go and it's not the tourist trap kind of stuff. Jake and I were just talking about how we live in Southern California and haven't really made much of an effort to explore the city or the state. We want to be more intentional about doing that this year. Callie's list is a great reference for ideas. If you live in the area or are planning a visit, you should check it out. Let's face it people Hollywood Boulevard just isn't that glamorous  LA has so much more going for it.

Do you have any favorite spots in LA/SoCal? We would love to add them to our list.

Happy Geeky Valentine's Day

February 14, 2013

Designs by My Geeky Valentine
For all you design nerds out there. Here is a perfect way to express your love in a language we understand.

So you're saying you love me more than Helvetica? Whoa that's big!

Seeing (Dalmatian) Spots

February 13, 2013

Dress // Belt // Blouse // Shoes // Clutch
Have you noticed the Dalmatian trend going around lately? I think it's the best thing to happen to fashion EVER! I hate to admit it, but Cruella de Vil was on to something. Thankfully the fashion world didn't carry out the idea quite like she wanted too. Don't worry little Dals you're safe with us.

Do you think it would be too much if I wore that dress with those shoes and carried that clutch all while walking our Dalmatian Pixel? Nah.

Quick & Easy Watercolor Valentines.

February 11, 2013

To be honest I wasn't quite ready for this week to start. Jake and I didn't get much of a weekend. Jake was off being a zombie all weekend (literally). He left early every morning and didn't get back until late. And since it was just Pixel and I at home I decided to be productive and do some much needed cleaning around the house. It sure didn't feel like a weekend.

So when I woke up this morning the last thing I wanted to do was get right to work. Instead I decided to do a little relaxing watercolor in preparation for Valentine's Day. We had guests make these same cards at our Shop/Social event on Friday too. Everyone really loved doing them. I ending up getting too busy during the party and didn't snap any good photos of the event. So since I don't have those to show you I thought I could at least show you some of what we did.

you will need:
  • watercolor paint
  • paint brushes
  • white crayon
  • cup of water
  • blank cardstock cards
  • envelopes

Easy peasy, right? If you're in even more of a hurry, you could always print out these mini valentines.

Julep did a version of this project but instead of using cards they created an abstract art valentine. Brilliant!

Finders Keepers: Letter Necklace

February 8, 2013

You know when they say anything tiny is cute? Well, it's true. These tiny gold letter necklaces from Olive Yew are pretty dang cute. Wouldn't you say?

Daily Dishonesty

February 7, 2013

I just came across this project Lauren Hom is doing called Daily Dishonesty. She is doing a whole series of hand lettered posters of little lies that she (and probably you too) tell yourself regularly. The type is so beautifully done and the quotes she comes up with are so witty. Not surprisingly I have told myself some of these lies a time or two. I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one. Most of the designs are done by her, but every now and again she has a guest artist design one.

There are so many other good designs on her blog so be sure to scroll through them if you need a good laugh this afternoon.

Lauren also shared her design process on her blog. I always love to see how other artists go about doing things. It never hurts to learn another method.

Pixel's Disney Debut

February 6, 2013

Remember back around Christmas we told you how we went to Disneyland with Pixel and they happened to be filming promotional video for their Kennel Club? Well here it is! Our little Pix can be seen with Jake at the 35 second mark. They are only on screen for a few seconds, but we still think it's pretty exciting.

A few blogs behind the ALT business cards

February 5, 2013

I finally started going through the piles of cards I received at ALT. I thought it would be fun to share with you some of the amazing bloggers behind the beautiful cards. I narrowed it down to just a few. Some of them I have heard of before, some of them are new to me. These are all blogs you should definitely check out. I think you'll like what you find.

The House That Lars Build
I got to chat with this lovely lady at the Clue Party. Brittany does some really amazing works. Not to mention makes really pretty paper flowers.

Ampersand Design Studio
Morgan & Carrie not only have a blog, but also have a shop filled with lots of ampersands. What's not to love about that?

Lupa & Pepi
Rachel runs a blog and shop too. We chatted it up at the Clue party and did a little dancing at the mini parties. She's one fun girl.

Sugar & Cloth
I only met Ashely quickly in passing but she was as sweet as can be. And her blog does not disappoint. She fills it with a lot of cute diy projects.

This Little Street
I had dinner with Audrey the very first night. She is originally from France but has lived all over the world. Amazing right? Her most recent post about patterns is a dream.

Melissa Esplin
Melissa is a really talented calligrapher. She even makes a lot of her own clothes. I'm pretty sure most everything she wore to ALT she made herself.

Somewhere Splendid
Somewhere Splendid is just that - splendid. Maddy posts lots of great parties and home decor.

There are tons of posts going around right now about ALT business cards so if you would like to see more just do a little google search.

Our Weekend: Palm Springs

February 4, 2013

We went on a little getaway this weekend to Palm Springs with some of our friends. We had such a great time eating banana bread french toast, riding bikes around town, playing lots of games, and just enjoying the company of our friends. Then we drove home sipping on yummy iced coffee with our sunroof open.

To end the perfect weekend we went longboarding with Pixel and then got to meet his new best friend Wall-E the Westie that our friends got to bring home on their way back from Palm Springs. He's a cutie! We feel so refreshed and ready to tackle the week.

Finders Keepers: Lolita Heart Sunglasses

February 1, 2013

I'm crushing pretty hard on these Lolita Heart Sunglasses from Tumbleweeds Handcraft right now. I'm definitely seeing some heart shaped sunglasses in my near future.

Here are a few other things I've found this week:

Polka dots and paper go so well together.
I've decided these are my favorite flowers.
Piles of puppies are always a good thing.
